સ્વામી વિવેકાનંદનું બાળપણ

આપણે આજે જે નરેન્દ્રની વાત માંડી બેઠા છીએ તે બંગાળી હતો. એનો જન્મ ઈ.સ. ૧૮૬૩ ની ૧૨ મી જાન્યુઆરીએ કલકત્તાના સિમોલિયો વિસ્તારમાં થયો હતો. પિતા વિશ્વનાથ દત્ત અને માતા ભુવનેશ્વરીદેવી. એ લોકો ઠીકઠીક ધનવાન હતા. પુત્ર નરેન્દ્રની એકલાની સેવામાં બબ્બે તો દાસીઓ રાખવામાં આવી હતી !
આવી ખમ્મા ખમ્મામાં ઊછેરતા નરેન્દ્રનું લાડકવાયું નામ ‘ વીલબીલે ’ હતું. એ ઘણો રમતિયાળ હતો. ચોરસિપાઈની રમત એને બહુ ગમતી અને ક્રિકેટમાં તો એટલો બધો રસ હતો કે પોતે સારો ક્રિકેટર બનવાની આશા રાખતો હતો. એને પશુપંખી પણ બહુ ગમે. મકાન પાછળની વાડીમાં બેઠો બેઠો મોર , કબૂતર , કાકાકૌઆ સાથે વાતો કર્યા કરે. વાંદરાં , બકરાં , ગાય અને ઘોડા સાથે દોડાદોડી કરે.
ઘોડા ઉપર તો એને એટલી પ્રીતિ હતી કે એક વાર બોલેલોઃ ‘ હું તો મોટો થઈને ઘોડાનો રખેવાળ બનીશ ! ‘ શરીરની કસરત પણ સતત ચાલે. મુક્કાબાજી પણ બહુ ગમે. સંગીતમાંય રસ. ભજનો ગાવામાં તો ઘણી વાર એવો ખોવાઈ જાય કે આજુબાજુનું એને કશું જ ભાન ન રહે.
એક દિવસ પોતાના દોસ્તો સાથે મંદિરમાં બેઠેલો. આંખો મીંચીને એ તો મનોમન કશીક પ્રાર્થના બોલવા લાગ્યો. એમ ને એમ એકધ્યાન થઈ ગયો. એટલામાં મંદિરમાં સાપ નીકળ્યો. એને જોઈને ” સાપ ! , સાપ ! ” કરતાં બીજાં સૌ છોકરા તો જાય નાઠાં. પણ નરેન્દ્રને તો એની ખબર પણ ન પડી. એ તો આંખો મીંચીને હાથ જોડીને ધ્યાનમાં મસ્ત બની ગયેલો.
ગભરાયેલા દોસ્તોએ નરેન્દ્રનાં માતાપિતાને વાત કરી : ‘મંદિરમાં સાપ આવ્યો છે અને તમારો છોકરો તો સૂનમૂન થઈને બેસી રહ્યો છે ! ‘ માતાપિતા હાંફળાંફાંફળા દોડ્યાં. મંદિરે પહોંચ્યા. પણ મંદિરને બારણે જ સડક થઈને ઊભા રહી ગયા, અંદર દોડી જવામાં જોખમ હતું. નાનકડો નરેન્દ્ર આંખો મીંચીને બેઠો હતો અને એની સામે જ પેલો નાગ ફેણ માંડીને ડોલતો હતો. એ નાગને જરાક ગુસ્સે થવાનું કારણ મળે તો નરેન્દ્રને ડંખ મારી દે.
બિચારાં માતા – પિતા અને દોસ્તો અધ્ધર શ્વાસે મંદિરની અંદર તાકી જ રહ્યાં. આ પછી થોડીક વારે નાગ જતો રહ્યો. માતાએ અંદર દોડીને નરેન્દ્રને તેડી લીધો. નરેન્દ્ર તોફાની તો હતો જ , સાથે નીડર પણ એવો જ. કશાથી ડરે નહિ ને !
એને એક વાર હીંચકા ખાવાની આદત પડી ગઈ. રોજ બપોરે હીંચકા ખાવા જોઈએ. પરંતુ હીંચકાની એની રીત આગવી જ ! નજીકની વાડીમાં ચંપાનું એક ઝાડ હતું. નરેન્દ્ર એ ચંપાના ઝાડ ઉપર ચડે. એની એક ડાળ ઉપર પગ ભરાવે અને પછી પોતે શરીર નીચે લટકાવીને હીંચકા ખાય. જાણે લંગુર ! જાણે વડવાગોળ ! એને પડવાની તો બીક જ નહિ,
એને આમ લટકતો જોઈને એક મુરબ્બીને બીક લાગી. છોકરો કદાચ પડી જશે. એમણે કહ્યું , ‘ નરેન્દ્ર ! આમ ઊંધા લટકીને હીંચકા ન ખવાય. કદાચ વાગી બેસશે. ’
નરેન્દ્ર કહે, ‘ ચિંતા ન કરો. મને નહિ વાગે, ’
આવી સારી શિખામણ આ છોકરાને ગળે નહીં ઊતરે એમ માનીને મુરબ્બીએ કહ્યું, ‘ અરે, આ ઝાડ ઉપર તો બ્રહ્મરાક્ષસ નામનું ભૂત થાય છે. એ તારી ડોક જ મરડી નાખશે. ‘
નરેન્દ્ર ખડખડાટ હસી પડ્યો. ‘ કાકા ! હજુ તો કોઈ બ્રહ્મરાક્ષસે મારી ડોક મરડી નથી. આ ઝાડ ઉપર તો હું મહિનાઓથી હીંચકા ખાઉં છું. છતાં બ્રહ્મરાક્ષસ આવશે તો હું જ એની ડોકી મરડી નાખીશ ! ‘ અને એ તો ચંપાની ડાળે ટાંટિયા લટકાવીને મોજથી હીંચકતો રહ્યો ….
પણ એ માત્ર તોફાની અને કસરતી નહોતો. હોશિયારી તો એની જ !
એક વાર એના પિતાને મધ્યપ્રદેશના રાયપુર ગામે જવાનું થયું. ત્યાં એમને બે વરસ રહેવાનું હતું. નરેન્દ્રે એ વખતે અંગ્રેજી ત્રીજા ( અત્યારના નવમા ) ધોરણની પરીક્ષા આપી હતી. એટલે ખરી રીતે અભ્યાસ ચાલુ રાખવો જોઈએ. પરંતુ એણે તો પિતાજી સાથે જવાની હઠ પકડી. અને એ રાયપુર ગયો પણ ખરો. મધ્યપ્રદેશનાં વનોમાં એ બે વરસ લગી રખડતો રહ્યો અને નદીઓમાં નહાતો રહ્યો.
બે વર્ષ પછી એ કલકત્તા પાછો ગયો. પાછો શાળામાં દાખલ થયો. એણે એક જ વર્ષમાં ત્રણ વર્ષનું ભણતર પૂરું કરી નાખ્યું અને મેટ્રિકની પરીક્ષા આપી. એની બુદ્ધિ એટલી તેજસ્વી હતી કે આ પરીક્ષામાં એ પહેલા વર્ગમાં આવ્યો. આગળ જતાં એની બુદ્ધિશક્તિ ઓર ખીલી ઊઠી. એક પુસ્તક એક વાર વાંચે કે એનો શબ્દેશબ્દ એને યાદ રહી જાય. જેવી આ યાદશક્તિ એવી જ બુદ્ધિશક્તિ.
એ શક્તિ એણે સત્યની શોધમાં લગાડી …. આગળ જતાં આ નરેન્દ્ર સંન્યાસી બન્યો. એણે વિવેકાનંદ નામ ધારણ કર્યું. આજે વિવેકાનંદની ગણતરી દેશની પ્રથમ હરોળની વિભૂતિઓમાં થાય છે.

The Narendra we are talking about today was a Bengali. He was born on 12 January, 1863 in Simolio area of Calcutta. Father Vishwanath Dutt and mother Bhuvaneshwaridevi. Those people were quite rich. Even the maids were kept in the service of son Narendra alone!
Narendra’s fond name was ‘Veelbile’. He was very playful. He loved the game of quadriplegic and was so much interested in cricket that he hoped to become a good cricketer himself. He also likes animals very much. He used to sit in the garden behind the house and talk to peacocks, pigeons and kakakoua. Run with monkeys, goats, cows and horses.
He had so much love for horses that once he said: ‘I will grow up and become a horse keeper! ‘Body exercise is also continuous. I also like boxing very much. Interest in music. He often gets so lost in singing bhajans that he is not aware of anything around him.
One day he was sitting in the temple with his friends. After closing his eyes, he began to say a prayer in his mind. They became concentrated. At that time, a snake appeared in the temple. Seeing it, all the other boys went away saying “Snake!, Snake!” But Narendra didn’t even know about it.
Frightened friends spoke to Narendra’s parents: ‘A snake has come to the temple and your boy is sitting there sleeping! ‘ The parents ran panting. Reached the temple. But the road was blocked at the door of the temple, it was dangerous to rush inside. Little Narendra was sitting with closed eyes and the snake was swaying in front of him. If that snake gets a reason to be angry, it will bite Narendra.
After some time the snake went away. Mother rushed inside and chased Narendra. Narendra was mischievous as well as fearless. Don’t be afraid of anything!
There was a champa tree in a nearby farm. Narendra climbed the Champa tree. He steps on one of its branches and then hangs himself under the body and jerks. Like a langur! Like an old man! Don’t be afraid of falling.
Seeing him hanging like this, a old man got scared. The boy might fall. He said, ‘Narendra! Thus, do not eat by hanging upside down. ‘ you will fall down ‘
Narendra says, ‘Don’t worry. I don’t care,’
Believing that such a good lesson would not be accepted by this boy, the sage said, ‘Hey, there is a ghost named Brahmarakshas on this tree. It will kill your Neck. ‘
Narendra laughed out loud. Uncle! No brahmarakshas have killed my Neck yet. I have been struggling for months on this tree. However, if Brahmarakshas comes, I will kill him! ‘ And he kept hanging on the champa branch and swaying with joy….
But it wasn’t just mischief and exercise. Intelligence is his!
Once his father had to go to Raipur village in Madhya Pradesh. He had to stay there for two years. At that time, Narendra gave the English third (currently ninth) standard exam. So study should continue properly. But he insisted on going with his father. And he went to Raipur. For two years he wandered in the forests of Madhya Pradesh and bathed in rivers.
After two years he went back to Calcutta. Returned to school. He completed three years of education in a single year and gave his matriculation examination. His intelligence was so bright that he came first in this exam. Later on, his intelligence flourished. He reads a book once and remembers it word by word. Like this memory is the same intelligence.
He put that energy into the search for truth… Later this Narendra became a hermit. He assumed the name Vivekananda. Today Vivekananda is counted among the great wonder of the country.
