ઝવેરચંદ મેઘાણીની આ કવિતા ૧૯૨૮ ગીરના જગલમાં તુલસીશ્યામ પાસેના એક નેસડામાં હીરબાઈ નામની ૧૪ વર્ષની ચારણ કન્યાએ એકલે હાથે પોતાની વાછરડીને મારનાર સિંહને એનું માંસ ચાખવા નહોતું દીધું અને ફક્ત લાકડીએથી ગીરના સાવજને હાંકી કાઢ્યો હતો.

“તુલસીશ્યામથી બે ગાઉ અમે ખજૂરીને નેસડે હતા,ત્યાં રીડ થઇ. સાવજ ડણક્યો. હાકોટા થવા માંડ્યા. રોળકોળ વેળા થઇ હતી. ખાડું-ધણ ઝૂંપડે આવતાં હતાં. તેમાંથી હીરબાઇ કરી એક ચારણ બાઇની વોડકીને સાવજે પાદરમાં જ પાડી. અમે બધા દોડ્યા. વીસેક જણ હતા. જ્યાં ધાર માથે ચડ્યા ત્યાં તો હીરબાઇ ક્યારની યે ત્યાં પહોંચી ગઇ હતી.

મરેલી વોડકી પર એ ચારણ-કન્યા ચડીને સાવજ સામે સોટો વીંઝતી હતી. સાવજ બે પગે સામો થઇ હોંકારા કરતો હતો. બાઇ સાવજના ફીણથી નાહી રહી, પણ ગાયને ચારણી બાઇએ સાવજને ખાવા ન દીધી….એ વખતે ‘ચારણ-કન્યા’ ગીત મેઘાણીભાઇ કાગળ-કલમ સિવાય રચીને ગાવા લાગ્યા. એમનું શરીર જાગી ઊઠ્યું. આંખો લાલ ઘ્રમેલ ત્રાંબા જેવી થઇ ગઇ. એ પણ સાવજ તરફ દોડવા લાગ્યા. અમે એમને માંડમાંડ પકડી રાખેલા.”

સાવજ ગરજે !

વનરાવનનો રાજા ગરજે
ગીરકાંઠાનો કેસરી ગરજે
ઐરાવતકુળનો અરિ ગરજે
કડ્યપાતળિયો જોદ્ધો ગરજે
મોં ફાડી માતેલો ગરજે
જાણે કો જોગંદર ગરજે
નાનો એવો સમદર ગરજે !

ક્યા ક્યા ગરજે ?

બાવળના જાળામાં ગરજે
ગરજે ડુંગરના ગાળામાં ગરજે
કણબીના ખેતરમાં ગરજે
ગામ તણા પાદરમાં ગરજે
નદીઓની ભેખડમાં ગરજે
ગિરિઓની ગોહરમાં ગરજે
ઉગમણો, આથમણો ગરજે
ઓરો ને આઘેરો ગરજે

થર થર કાંપે !

વાડામાં વાછડલાં કાંપે
કૂબામાં બાળકડાં કાંપે
મધરાતે પંખીડાં કાંપે
ઝાડ તણાં પાંદડલા કાંપે
પહાડોના પથ્થર પણ કાંપે
સરિતાઓના જળ પણ કાંપે
સૂતાં ને જાગંતાં કાંપે
જડ ને ચેતન સૌએ કાંપે

આંખ ઝબૂકે

કેવી એની આંખ ઝબૂકે
વાદળમાંથી વીજ ઝબૂકે
જોટે ઊગી બીજ ઝબૂકે
જાણે બે અંગાર ઝબૂકે
હીરાના શણગાર ઝબૂકે
જોગંદરની ઝાળ ઝબૂકે
વીર તણી ઝંઝાળ ઝબૂકે
ટમટમતી બે જ્યોત ઝબૂકે

જડબાં ફાડે !

ડુંગર જાણે ડાચાં ફાડે !
જોગી જાણે ગુફા ઉઘાડે !
જમરાજાનું દ્વાર ઉઘાડે !
પૃથ્વીનું પાતાળ ઉઘાડે !
બરછી સરખા દાંત બતાવે
લસ લસ કરતા જીભ ઝુલાવે.

બ્હાદુર ઊઠે !

બડકંદાર બિરાદર ઊઠે
ફરસી લેતો ચારણ ઉઠે
ખડગ ખેંચતો આહીર ઊઠે
બરછી ભાલે કાઠી ઊઠે
ઘર ઘરમાંથી માટી ઊઠે
ગોબો હાથ રબારી ઊઠે
સોટો લઈ ઘરનારી ઊઠે
ગાય તણા રખવાળો ઊઠે
દૂધમલા ગોવાળો ઊઠે
મૂછે વળ દેનારા ઊઠે
ખોંખારો ખાનારા ઊઠે
માનું દૂધ પીનારા ઊઠે !
જાણે આભ મિનારા ઊઠે !

ઊભો રે’જે

ત્રાડ પડી કે ઊભો રે’જે !
ગીરના કુત્તા ઊભો રે’જે !
કાયર દુત્તા ઊભો રે’જે !
પેટભરા ! તું ઊભો રે’જે !
ભૂખમરા ! તું ઊભો રે’જે !
ચોર લૂંટારા ઊભો રે’જે !
ગા-ગોઝારા ઊભો રે’જે !

ચૌદ વરસની ચારણ કન્યા
ચૂંદડીયાળી ચારણ કન્યા
શ્વેતસુંવાળી ચારણ કન્યા
બાળી ભોળી ચારણ કન્યા
લાલ હિંગોળી ચારણ કન્યા
ઝાડ ચડંતી ચારણ કન્યા
પહાડ ઘૂમંતી ચારણ કન્યા
જોબનવંતી ચારણ કન્યા
આગ ઝરંતી ચારણ કન્યા
નેસ નિવાસી ચારણ કન્યા
જગદમ્બા શી ચારણ કન્યા
ડાંગ ઉઠાવે ચારણ કન્યા

ભયથી ભાગ્યો !

સિંહણ, તારો ભડવીર ભાગ્યો
રણ મેલીને કાયર ભાગ્યો
ડુંગરનો રમનારો ભાગ્યો
હાથીનો હણનારો ભાગ્યો
જોગીનાથ જટાળો ભાગ્યો
મોટો વીર મૂછાળો ભાગ્યો
નર થઈ તું નારીથી ભાગ્યો
નાનકડી છોડીથી ભાગ્યો !

અસ્ત્રીના સતથી એ ભાગ્યો

The girl who fought the Lion – Charan Kanya (Zaverchand Meghani)

When one is to talk about Gujarati literary figures, a name that stands out prominently is that of Zaverchand Meghani (ઝવેરચંદ મેઘાણી ). Meghani is one of the foremost Gujarati author and poet, one whose works had influenced even Mahatma Gandhi, so much so that Gandhi conferred on him the title of ‘Rashtriya Kavi” (National Poet). They were contemporaries.

“Shaurya rasa” (शौर्य रस) is predominant in Meghani’s works. His poems are energising, uplifting, full of valour and grit. His composition Chaaran Kanya (चारण कन्या, ચારણ કન્યા) is a masterpiece that brings Shaurya Rasa to the fore. It is about a young 14 year girl by name Heerbai of the Chaaran tribe of Gujarat. To this day, raw grit is a defining feature of many tribes in Gujarat, Chaaran being one of them. They traditionally lived at the foothills of Girnar – the home to massive and ferocious Lions.

Having lions as your neighbours isn’t exactly a dream but that does have a rub off effect in terms or acquiring the qualities of the lion. They most definitely did on Heerbai. Hence, when a Lion dared to enter her premises and scoop of her calf, mad with rage and unfazed, the young Heerbai goes chasing the lion wielding but a stick. The event that follows, is captured by Meghani in Chaaran Kanya.

The first half of the poem talks about the ferocity of the Lion – his spine chilling roar, his fiery blazing eyes, the terror he instills in the hearts of the people and the animals around. He was death himself. Such a terror inducing lion enters the “angan” of the house where Heerbai lived. And as is the nature of this big carnivore, he picked up one of the calves tied there. Hindus, of all communities and creed have always attributed a special place in the hearts and mind to Cows and Calves since time immemorial.

The attachment and reverence is not too different than how dog owners feel about their pets, may be even more. Because Cows not only provide with milk and ghee and bulls to tend the farms, they also tend to reciprocate human sentiments much more than other animals do.

Not surprising then, that Heerbai lost her cool when she saw her calf being carried away. Without a flinch or hesitation, swinging a stick in her hand, she runs towards the Lion– How dare he touch her calf, how dare he venture close to her beloved pet. She won’t allow the calf to die, not till she stands there strong. She roars, she burns, like Durga she jumps before the Lion. So terrifying is her spirit and valiant is her resolve that the Lion loses his vigor. Turns back and off he goes, leaving the calf behind.

Meghani is witness to this fight and so awestruck he is, that it is said, words just flow out of his mouth. He paints the picture as he saw it but in words. The emotion, the anger, the grit, the courage – one can see them, one can feel them, through Meghani’s words.
